“Rice: Genetic Variation Student & Teacher Workshop” (July 21-24, 2019)

  • Event name: Rice: Genetic Variation Student & Teacher Workshop
  • Date: July 21-24, 2019
  • School/Grade level: High school students (8-12th grade)
  • Hosted by: STEM Center for Mathematics and Science Education (CMASE) supported by NSF-EPSCoR
  • Venue: 979 W Maple St, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, AR (Campus)

Activities Performed

  1. Hands on training on rice planting using established soil mixture for heat stress experiments.
  2. Distinguish diverse rice genotypes/varieties based on seed color, plant height, and seed germination, and other rice characteristics.
  3. Hands on activities for measuring physiological parameters such photosynthesis and other gas exchange parameters using advanced equipment such LICOR, SPAD, and PhotoSynQ in diver rice genotypes with and without heat stress conditions.
  4. Recording the physiological, morphological, grain yield, quality data, and their statistical analysis in MS excel.
  5. Hands on training on DNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, and PCR using diverse rice genotypes.
  6. Detecting natural genetic variation in diverse rice genotypes with and without heat stress using bioinformatics tools.
  7. Description on how to develop transgenic lines using candidate genes in rice using several methods.
